The Story Behind "I Saw Three Ships"

The lyrics mention the ships sailing into Bethlehem, yet the nearest body of water is the Dead Sea, which is approcimately 20 miles away. The reference to three ships could be from the three ships that carried the relics of the Biblical magi to Cologne Cathedral in the 12th century. Another possible reference is Wenceslaus II, King of Bohemia, who bore a coat of arms "Azure three galleys argent."  Another possibility is that the ships are the camels used by the Magi, as camels are referred to as "ships of the desert."

I saw three ships come sailing in
On Christmas Day, on Christmas Day;
I saw three ships come sailing in
On Christmas Day in the morning.

And who was in those ships all three,
On Christmas Day, on Christmas Day?
And who was in those ships all three,
On Christmas Day in the morning?

Our Saviour Christ and his ladye,
On Christmas Day, on Christmas Day;
Our Saviour Christ and his ladye,
On Christmas Day in the morning.

Pray whither sailed those ships all three,
On Christmas Day, on Christmas Day?
Pray whither sailed those ships all three,
On Christmas Day in the morning?

O they sailed into Bethlehem,
On Christmas Day, on Christmas Day;
O they sailed into Bethlehem,
On Christmas Day in the morning.

And all the bells on Earth shall ring,
On Christmas Day, on Christmas Day;
And all the bells on Earth shall ring,
On Christmas Day in the morning.

And all the angels in Heaven shall sing,
On Christmas Day, on Christmas Day;
And all the angels in Heaven shall sing,
On Christmas Day in the morning.

And all the souls on Earth shall sing,
On Christmas Day, on Christmas Day;
And all the souls on Earth shall sing,
On Christmas Day in the morning.

In the below video, Gregg Braden shares this beautiful Christmas carol with us again, playing the acoustics as well as his own vocals. I meditated in my heart while listening to this and it touched me deeply. I hope you find peace and love in listening to this sweet tune.
