The announcement was made Friday, June 25, 2021 at a press conference:
"...to lift all domestic restrictions was made at a government press conference this morning by Health Minister Svandís Svavarsdóttir. Iceland’s current restrictions, which include a 300-person gathering limit, mandatory mask use for selected activities, and a one-metre distancing rule, will all be lifted as of midnight.
"It's a strange feeling, having so often been here... to announce tougher measures, but today's the day we're going to lift them," Prime Minister Katrin Jakobsdottir said at the press conference. We're reinstating the society we're used to living in", she said in a statement.
The decision to lift the restrictions are in accordance with recommendations of Chief Epidemiologist Þórólfur Guðnason.
The decision marks the end of rules around social distancing, mask-wearing, limits on public gatherings and the opening hours of bars and restaurants from Saturday.
Iceland first introduced virus restrictions in March 2020, and Health Minister Svandis Svavarsdottir said the easing of measures signaled a return to normal life."
Although Iceland may be ahead of the world in eliminating covidiocy restrictions first imposed in 2020, for visitors and tourists there is a major caveat as part of its implementation.
Before you make your Iceland Vacation travel plans, make sure you have PROOF that you received the experimental fairy dust puncture OR be prepared to go through the (worthless) PCR testing process:
Border Restrictions will loosen July 1, 2021
"From July 1, vaccinated travelers and children will no longer be tested at the country’s borders, though unvaccinated travelers will still be required to undergo testing and five-day quarantine upon entering the country. Around 88% of the country’s population aged 16 and over have received one or both doses of COVID-19 vaccine.
Travelers to Iceland born before 2005 who cannot present valid certificates of vaccination or proof of antibodies must present a negative PCR test certificate at the border, as well as undergo testing and five-day quarantine as before. These regulations will apply from July 1 until August 15, at which point authorities will review and revise rules as necessary.
The full removal of curbs was planned for the second half of June, when around 75 percent of people over 16 were expected to have received at least one vaccine dose.
Iceland will keep up restrictions at its borders, requiring a negative PCR test of travelers on arrival and a further check after a five-day quarantine for the unvaccinated.
Vaccinated arrivals or those who have overcome a previous COVID-19 infection will be free of the requirement to submit to a test on arrival in Iceland from July 1."

So as an Icelander you can throw away the mask and hug your local grocer, but if visiting you can only hug your travel guide after you have proved you're covidiocy free.
