Perhaps we should become aware firstly of the correct way to breathe. Yogic books seem to be the best source for this or now, YouTube. There is first of all the need to breathe through the nose and not so much through the mouth. First of all, your nose has hairs inside the nostrils to catch anything that is floating around in the air and there is a lot of stuff flying around. The mouth, has nothing to trap anything, it just goes through the mouth and straight into the stomach. The major benefit I noticed, when I started breathing through my nose consciously was that I didn't catch a cold for over 2 years. That should be enough motivation.
